Rhodochrosite's attraction is apparent due to its raspberry-pink to rose-red hue. The gemstone is taken from the Greek words rhodos, which means "rose," and khros, which means "color," and alludes to its brilliant pink to rose-red tint. Rhodochrosite is often pink to red in hue, but it can also be yellowish, orange, or brown. The pink and white bands found in Rhodochrosite gem stones are frequently used in semi-precious jewelry.
Rhodochrosite is also called Raspberry Spar, Manganese Spar, and Inca Rose (Rosa del Inca or Rosinca) because of the belief that Incas thought attributed Rhodochrosite to the blood of their forefathers converted into stone. It is also Argentina's National Gemstone.
